Route

There isn’t too much choice in the route from Port Augusta in South Australia all the way to Darwin – there is only one sealed route straight up the middle. Until then, I’ve got options. So from Melbourne I plan to head for Geelong and make my way to the Grampians, most likely along the Great Ocean Road. There will be some quite steep roads in the Grampians so I imagine it will take a while to get through. After struggling through the climbs in the Grampians I’ll continue north to the riverlands on the Victoria-New South Wales border on the Murray around Mildura.

Out of Victoria, follow the Silver City Highway north to Broken Hill. A few days around Broken Hill seeing the sights, visiting Silverton and I’ll follow the Barrier Highway into South Australia. I’m going to head south towards Adelaide to a place called Snowtown for a milkshake – I hear it’s quite good. The Flinders Ranges and Wilpena Pound are close to Port Augusta and if things are going well I may make a short diversion for a few days.

North of Port Augusta, just basically follow the Stuart Highway all the way to Darwin through towns such as Coober Pedy, Alice Springs Tennant Creek and Katherine. There will be some other distractions along the way like Uluru, Kata Tjuta, Kings Canyon and Kakadu National Park before my final arrival in Darwin.
